Cutwater Gin and Tonic Cans vs. Bottle (Calories, Carbs, Taste)

There’s nothing more traditional, respectable, and simple than a good Gin and Tonic. Sure they’re quick and easy to make straight from the bottle. But who doesn’t want the option of a Ready To Drink version?

There’s only one condition: a canned gin & tonic must taste as good or better than one you can make yourself! And that’s today’s topic.

What’s the Difference between Cutwater Gin and Tonic Cans vs. the Bottle

The biggest difference between Cutwater cans and the bottle is that cans are a ready-to-drink Gin and Tonic. Whereas the bottle is just the gin, which means you’ll need your own glass and your favorite tonic. Secondly, the cans are far more portable and come in one flavor: cucumber grapefruit. And it’s delicious!

Let’s get into my full review of the cans of Cutwater vs. just going out and buying a bottle of Cutwater Gin.

First Impressions of the Canned Cutwater Gin & Tonic

I was taken by surprise at my first sip. I was expecting the usual, ho-hum, standard Gin and Tonic served all over the world by bartenders on auto-pilot.

I am pleased to report that I was totally taken off guard by intense grapefruit and mellow cucumber. A few sips later, I was mentally transported to the beach.

The label doesn’t boast of this flavor adventure so it is probably a surprise to those who don’t read the fine print.

Overall, the Cutwater Gin and Tonic is very refreshing with a touch of juniper present.

What is Cutwater Gin Made From?

Cutwater Gin is distilled from corn. It leans toward the London Dry style yet has a California twist. Of the 11 botanicals in a bottle of Cutwater Gin, juniper, rose and coriander are the standout flavors followed by a black pepper and vanilla finish.

For those who like a deeper, spicier flavor, there is a Barrel Rested version of Old Grove Cutwater Gin available. Charred oak barrels impart a warm sensibility with big cinnamon notes, smoke and just a bit of juniper at the end. It can be sipped neat just like a whisky or will transfer its oakiness in a cocktail.

How Many Calories are in a Cutwater Cocktail?

Each 12 oz can contains:

  • 230 calories
  • 29 carbohydrates
  • 28 g sugar

Even though it contains 6.2% alcohol by volume, exceeding the typical 5% of a regular beer, it may be a mixer heavy for some. The gin to tonic ratio of a canned Cutwater Gin and Tonic is 6:1 compared to the typical 3:1 or less.

The ratio is unavoidable to keep the beverage palatable and not too strong for its 12 ounce size. That being said, it has a very pleasant flavor, doesn’t seem watered down.

If you’re looking to save calories, you may want to make your own. Old Grove Cutwater Gin is 44 ABV when poured straight from the bottle and it runs about 100 calories for an ounce and a half.

You could simply use a light tonic in the range of 20 calories and use your own ribbon of cucumber and as slice of grapefruit.

Another option for a lower calorie version is to try Tanqueray canned gin and tonic.

Who owns Cutwater?

Cutwater Spirits began as an offshoot of Ballast Point Brewing Company of San Diego around 2007. By 2015, the brewery had been sold to Constellation Brands allowing its founders to concentrate on its spirits division and let the master brewer Yussef Cherney become the master distiller.

It was an easy transition from canning beer to cocktails. The emphasis on quality ingredients, including liquor from Cutwater’s own distillery, changed the game for canned cocktails.

According to Cherney, in those days, majority of canned cocktails were “…a mixture of some mystery alcohol derived from beer (just like the modern day seltzers) or some bizarre mix of ingredients you would never want to drink more than a sip of.”

According to me: What you taste in a canned RTE cocktail from Cutwater is the result of imagination, high standards and dedicated research. The cocktail you enjoy is made with bar quality ingredients.

How much does Cutwater Sell For?

Typically, a 750 ml bottle of Old Grove Cutwater Gin sells in the range of $25.99 to $29.99.

You should be able to find a Cutwater 4-pack for $12.99. They are also available individually for about $3.99 depending where you shop.

Should I buy Cutwater Canned Cocktails?

Cutwater canned cocktails are tasty, dependable and reasonably-priced. With at least 29 varieties made from tequila, vodka, rum and whiskey, there’s something for everyone.

If you’re entertaining, they offer a perfect solution whether your party is in your backyard or at the beach. Ready to drink, Cutwater Cocktails offer high quality, carefully considered ingredients and in a very wide and interesting variety.
